Snoop Dogg Goes Indie With Dam-Funk on ‘Faden Away’

Snoop Dogg 7 Days of Dam-Funk Faden Away Snoopzilla

West Coast gangsta godfather Snoop Dogg and Los Angeles groove merchant Dâm-Funk have teamed up for an entire album on revered indie-rap hub Stones Throw Records. Together the two are going by 7 Days of Funk, although Calvin Broadus has renamed himself Snoopzilla (in honor of Bootsy Collins) for the occasion. The news comes with the duo’s debut single, “Faden Away,” streaming below. The track features Dâm’s typically freewheeling keyboard runs and snapping percussion, while Snoop sings spacily and raps a few G-wheeling bars to boot.

Said Snoop via the label: “We’re the babies of the Mothership. I’ve had funk influences in my music my whole career. Dâm-Funk is cold. He’s keeping the funk alive and I knew I had to get down with him.” Mr. Funk chimed in too: “Snoop knew what I was thinking without me having to articulate it… These beats were made for him and he laid down some of the smoothest harmonies and melodies I’ve ever heard. It’s hip-hop, but you can also hear what we grew up on, from Zapp to Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and Patrice Rushen.”

There’s an as-yet untitled album on the way December 10. Get a deeper feel for their collaboration via the promo clip above. “Faden Away” is available via iTunes and Stones Throw, and as the label points out, it’s Snoop’s first single to feature a lone producer since the release of 1993’s Doggystyle.
