Many opt for a greasy meal, a serving of electrolytes, or even a little hair of the dog, but last night (March 18) at Seattle’s Chop Suey venue, booze-infected St. Patty’s Day drinkers nursed hangovers with the down tempo gems of Baltimore’s own Beach House. And the classic rock/folk persuasions and clever pop sensibilities of openers the Papercuts and Throw Me the Statue, respectively, only added to this Wham City duo’s cure, which arrived with a heavy dose of latest LP, Devotion.
Fresh off their recent showcase at SXSW, Beach House’s Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, both clad in completely in white, glided through their set chock full of Casio-inspired beats and deliciously haunting melodies. Standouts “Gila” and “Apple Orchard,” both plodding ballads translating flawlessly live, evoked widespread applause and smiles from glossy faces across the venue. Overall, the evening’s soothing music and Beach House’s pacifying delivery — and its absolute necessity considering the crowd’s physical state — reminded this concertgoer just how happy he is that St. Patrick’s Day comes only once a year.
