Elvis Presley Guitarist and Right-Hand Man Scotty Moore Has Died

You know “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” and he played on all of them. Scotty Moore, Elvis Presley‘s longtime guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, has died in his home at the age of 84. No cause of death was given, but Moore was reportedly in poor health for months.

The Tennessee native began playing guitar when he was 8, and one fateful day in 1954 was asked by Sun Records to do a session with a teenage Elvis Presley. The resulting tune, “That’s All Right (Mama),” made history as the beginning of both Elvis and rock’n’roll itself becoming household names. Moore, along with bassist Bill Black and drummer D.J. Fontana, became known as the Blue Moon Boys, Presley’s longtime backing band, playing on the legend’s nearly uncountable hit streak and dozens of albums.

“Everyone else wanted to be Elvis, I wanted to be Scotty,” Keith Richards once said.
