The Oscars 2007

Last night, filmophiles worldwide watched as silver screen stars and entertainment industry leaders descended upon Hollywood for the 79th Annual Academy Awards. Quirky talk show host Ellen DeGeneres brought a fresh and eccentric mood as the ceremony’s host with wacky skits that accumulated both laughs and awkward moments. In addition, the installment offered a humorous song-and-dance bit by Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and John C. Reilly, a performance by Dreamgirls stars Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce, and live rendition of “I Need to Wake Up” by Melissa Etheridge, which won for Best Original Song in Al Gore’s climate documentary, An Inconvenient Truth.

And the Oscar goes to:

The Departed, which delivered Martin Scorsese his first Oscar following seven snubs and walked away as the evening’s biggest winner with Oscars for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Achievement in Directing.

Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth for Best Documentary Feature.

Helen Mirren, crowned as Best Actress for The Queen.

Forest Whitaker, as Best Actor for his role as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

Little Miss Sunshine for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar.

Jennifer Hudson as Best Supporting Actress for Dreamgirls.

Alan Arkin, as Best actor in a Supporting Role for Little Miss Sunshine.

Pan’s Labyrinth for Achievement in Art Direction, Achievement in Cinematography, and Achievement in Makeup.

Here’s what bloggers are saying about the Oscar winners and losers:

“I was fairly pleased with most of the winners. I’m thrilled that Helen Mirren won, since I loved The Queen and thought she did an amazing job. I had hoped for Pan’s Labyrinth to win for best foreign picture, but they managed to win three very good awards so I’m happy for that. I haven’t seen The Departed, so I’ll have to reserve my judgment until I do see it. I would have liked to have seen Little Miss Sunshine or The Queen win, but you can’t have it all.” — ancientgirl, ancientgirl.livejournal.com

“Aww, I love that sweet Jennifer Hudson. Poor girl may never win another award, or indeed act in another movie, but by god she earned her moment in the spotlight.” — starri1, starri1.livejournal.com

“All of America rolled their eyes when Melissa Etheridge won for best music. I mean C’Mon! It beat Dreamgirls? Can the shallow political views of the Academy be any more apparent? I love Ellen DeGeneres, and thought she did a pretty good job. But was she wearing a velvet tux? And what was up with that vacuuming skit? I hope she comes back next year, and also hope that she is not so self-deprecating.” — pat, belch.com

“That skit with Will Ferrell and Jack Black put me on the floor, I’m not even kidding!” — alfredkropp, blog.myspace.com

“Ellen made me uncomfortable. She seemed nervous and anxious and in turn didn’t make a good host. I was just scared she was going to mess up or something. She seriously lacked confidence and authority. The dance crew tumblers were freaking amazing. I thought Jennifer Hudson’s boob was going to pop out during her performance.” — quantumleaperxx, quantumleaperxx.livejournal.com

“Here’s an inconvenient truth for ya: the Oscars suck!”– citylightsbookshop, blog.myspace.com

“Martin Scorsese won what I thought was a sympathy Oscar for Best Picture. I mean, yeah, the movie was great and it was what he was famous for-mob movies.” — Debbie, romance12006.livejournal.com

“I was very happy to see Scorsese finally win for Best Director, especially being flanked on stage by Spielberg, Coppola, and Lucas as he accepted the award. It was also a nice slap in the face to Dreamgirls.sabotlours, sabotlours.livejournal.com
