Oh No! Oh My!

Who? Since 2005, Austin natives Greg Barkley (vocals/guitar), Daniel Hoxmeier (guitar/keys/banjo) and Joel Calvin (drums) have created the playful indie pop tresses of Oh No! Oh My!. Their EP debut, Between the Devil and the Sea, sets sail via Dim Mak August 7th. That same month, with Tim Regan (keyboards) and Will McDonald (bass) in tow, Oh No! Oh My! are off to spread upbeat experimentalism throughout the continental U.S. with synth-pop sweethearts Au Revoir Simone.

What’s the Deal? Oh No! Oh My! are champions of artful indie pop utilizing multi-instrumentation (Wurlitzers and hand-claps included) and unorthodox vocal arrangements to create something undeniably catchy. “The Party Punch” flows with Neutral Milk Hotel-ish vocals over top of driving, acoustic strums, and a sweeping chorus of falsetto voices. But it’s their winsome quirkiness that allows the group to pull off weaving the gorgeous balladry of “Oh Be One” around a Star Wars reference, making dorks everywhere suddenly a little bit cooler.

Fun Fact: While touring the U.S., Oh No! Oh My! had a “oh no” moment of their own. “We were stranded with a broken down van for a week in a meth addict-ridden hotel in Yakima, Washington,” Daniel Hoxmeier explains to SPIN.com. “And our drummer Joel decided to get a tattoo on his left forearm that says, “Curse of Yakima” to always remember the harrowing experience.” WILLIAM MILLS
