Numbers Escape the ‘Mind Hole’

While they’ve endured a continuous rock’n’roll identity crisis, San Francisco’s experimental indie rockers known as Numbers have come out on the other side for “Mind Hole.” Dave Broekema (guitar), Eric Landmark (keyboards), and Indra Dunis (vocals/drums) have shed their dance-punk roots of albums past, and have cracked their own code on “Mind Hole,” a track that channels a healthy level of fear and stress in classic noise rock fashion. With a spooky piano-driven intro that leads to a backdrop of Broekema’s sturdy guitar work, “Mind Hole” is fiercely concentrated thanks to Dunis’ pearly vocals and Landmark’s carnival-like synth beats. The near-four minute psych-driven jam, surreal yet a stunning genre-blending capsule of pure art rock, also recalls Sonic Youth’s golden days, or perhaps explores the potential musings of Mates of State if only they hailed from Seattle, circa ’93. It’s clear that Numbers is ready to be what they are on Now You Are This, their follow up to their 2005’s We’re Animals, out August 21st via Kill Rock Stars.
