Mutual Benefit Score Upper Class Malaise in Exquisite ‘Advanced Falconry’ Video

Singer-songwriter Jordan Lee records as Mutual Benefit, a mostly one-man band that recently issued its debut full-length album, Love’s Crushing Diamond. Now, Lee has paired the lushly arranged standout track “Advanced Falconry” with a music video created by film collective Bangs (which helmed Autre Ne Veut’s ballroom-set “Ego Free Sex Free” video) and directed by Allie Avital Tsypin. Premiered via the New York TimesT Magazine, the clip takes a slow-motion look at a family posing for an outdoor, autumn photo shoot. The camera catches every frown, restless sigh, and expression of resentment between the relatives.

“What I loved about this concept was that it stretches out this 15-second moment, documenting all the nuances in what was happening between these people,” Lee told T Magazine. “When everyone is pretending to be happy, you actually make the worst faces, and the slo-mo captures that. It becomes this really good metaphor to depict the space between realness and artificiality.”
