This morning, a few hours before the start of the Michael Jackson memorial service, the Staples Center courtyard resembled a dense jungle of cables and microphones and satellite dishes, beefy camera guys shooting pictures of other beefy camera guys shooting pictures of other beefy camera guys. An alien landscape in which every human somehow seemed comfortably at home.

As millions across the world watched on TV, more 17,000 of Michael Jackson's fans, family members, and friends gathered to pay their respects to the King of Pop today during a public memorial service at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

But one "goodbye" stood out among the rest.

Today, the world will say goodbye to one of its biggest, most talented stars: Michael Jackson.

Jackson, who died at 50 on June 25 due to cardiac arrest, will be honored with a tribute at Los Angeles' Staples Center; some 17,500 fans won tickets to the event, which begins at 1 P.M. EST/10 A.M. PST.
