Marvel Comics Meet Hip-Hop in Amazing Classic Album Cover Homages

While recent Marvel movies might be celebrating classic rock (Awesome Mix Vol 1., anyone?) the current crop of comics are all about hip-hop. After kicking off the year with some amazing Run the Jewels-themed comic covers, Marvel is going all-in with a series of more than 50 variant covers that are all homages to classic album covers. “For years, Marvel Comics and hip-hop culture have been engaged in an ongoing dialogue,” Marvel Editor-in-Chief and known hip-hop fan Axel Alonso said in press release. “Beginning this October, we will shine a spotlight on the seamless relationship between those two unique forces.”

A handful of the covers have been revealed ahead of time, and they’re spot-on. Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel in particular makes for a great Lauryn Hill, while current Captain America Sam Wilson does his best A$AP Rocky. 50 Cent, meanwhile, probably wishes he had Tony Stark’s money. (And if you’re wondering why all the comics are #1, it’s because Marvel is in the middle of this totally bonkers event called Secret Wars that’ll result in a reboot of the whole universe. Comics are crazy.)
