Marianne Faithfull Breaks Back, Cancels Shows

Marianne Faithfull Broken Back Cancelled Shows

Sixties rock’n’roll icon Marianne Faithfull has canceled a series of dates after breaking her back while vacationing in the U.S. The English singer, songwriter, and actress actually suffered the incident last month and had hoped to recover in time for a show in Beirut. Though the Rolling Stones collaborator did not share the exact details of her injury, the BBC reports that the 66-year-old fractured her sacrum, which is the triangular bone at the base of the spine.

“I broke my back in July and hoped and prayed I would be better enough to be able to do the performance on 17 August, although it’s not very long, but my recovery was going well,” Faithfull wrote in a letter to her European fans. “Alas. I have never been to the Lebanon though I know it through books. It looks like one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

She’s also been forced to cancel September solo shows in Chicago and New York, plus an appearance at an Edith Piaf tribute in the latter city to boot. Faithfull, who beat breast cancer in 2006, is recovering in her Paris home. Her 20th solo album — the follow-up to 2011’s Horses and High Heels — will evidently be delayed as a result of the accident.
