Lorca Spins a Beguilingly Minimal Thread on ‘Creta Kano’

After becoming familiar with Amsterdam-via-U.K. producer Breach from his ridiculously booty-bass-y floor-filler “Jack,” for most listeners it might be a bit of a surprise to hear the minimally adorned and ambient techno cuts on his imprint, Naked Naked. Brighton-based DJ and longtime label affiliate Lorca falls squarely within this spectral spectrum — while sketching somewhat outside it — with his new Creta Kano/Malta Kano EP, out November 20. The A-side and title track (according to Lorca, it and the B-side, “Malta Kano,” are inspired by characters of the same names in Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) pulses tensely with snippets of bated breath, while unresolved chordal progressions with futuristic timbres reminiscent of Zero 7 float around in the background.
