KODE9

Steve Goodman wears many hats: Head of London’s influential Hyperdub label, member of the University of Warwick’s Cybernetic Culture Research Unit, and a formidable DJ and producer in his own right. A key instigator at dubstep’s inception, he became something like its loyal opposition as the genre calcified and grew conservative. With bass music awash in Burial clones, he has pushed Hyperdub into increasingly deeper, stranger waters, from Hype Williams’ surrealist anti-pop to Laurel Halo’s Singularity-saluting synth work. In his book Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear, Goodman examined the links between sound systems and systems of control — a germane topic for AnCo’s own fight-or-flight-inducing squalls and crescendos.
