Jim O’Rourke Exits Sonic Youth

After five years as a full member of the band, musician Jim O’Rourke is leaving Sonic Youth to pursue his interests in film, Pitchforkmedia.com reports. O’Rourke has already been involved with the Jack Black hit School of Rock — Jim helped the wee ones learn to play their instruments. He’s also worked on soundtracks to the Werner Herzog documentary Grizzly Man and the Harmony Korine schizophrenia film Julien Donkey Boy. Don’t worry about the Youth, though, they’re alright: Guitarist Lee Ranaldo told Pitchfork that Sonic Youth will continue as a four piece without O’Rourke. “Change is always good,” Ranaldo said. “It brings you to a new place.” Sonic Youth sans O’Rourke will play several European dates at the end of this month, including two dates in Paris to commemorate the 25th anniversary of John Lennon’s death.
