Monsters of Folk Kick Off U.S. Tour
The indie supergroup adds up to more than the sum of their parts -- although those individual parts are pretty special too.

Monsters of Folk -- the indie supergroup featuring M. Ward, My Morning Jacket's Jim James, and Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis -- gave the crowd at Vancouver's Commodore ballroom their money's worth with an epic two-and-a-half-hour set on the opening night of their U.S. tour.

Indie supergroup Monsters of Folk has announced plans for a fall tour, kicking off October 13 in Vancouver, BC, before hitting 16 cities across the U.S.

Jim James of My Morning Jacket is no stranger to cover songs, having paid homage to everyone from James Brown to Elton John in his band's oft-epic live sets. Now, with his first proper release as a solo artist, James is focusing his tribute on one singular talent: George Harrison.

The trajectory of My Morning Jacket from humble folkies with jam-band tendencies into a group with Super Bowl halftime potential may seem an unlikely career arc. From the band's first album, 1999's The Tennessee Fire, singer/guitarist Jim James has couched his ghostly, reverb-soaked falsetto in American Gothicism. The tunes were pretty and a tad creepy, but somewhat shapeless.
