Drake Teases 2015 Album on James Blake-Sampling ‘0 to 100 / The Catch Up’

Drake, "0 to 100 / The Catch Up,' spring 2015 album, James Blake

Drake knows when to accelerate and when to ask for patience. The Nothing Was the Same rapper took the stage last night at Hot 97’s Summer Jam in New Jersey with Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne, and he marked the occasion by sharing new song “0 to 100 / The Catch Up” on his website.

The track opens with a couple of minutes of unsparing, Instagram-peacocking braggadocio, and then the production (by Boi-1da, with co-production by 40 and Nineteen85) takes a turn toward icy chill, as Drake gets to the point: “We already got spring 2015 poppin’ / PND droppin’, Reps-up P droppin’, Majid Jordan droppin’, OB droppin’, not to mention me droppin’.” Yup, it sounds like he’s threatening a new album next spring.

The latter half’s introspective mode harks back to Take Care‘s “The Ride,” where the then-sophomore album artist warns his “junior and senior will only get meaner.” An encouraging sign for LP No. 4: The vocalist at the end here is a sampled James Blake, according to the song’s metadata. Late last year Blake remixed Drake’s “Come Thru,” and the U.K. producer’s post-dubstep moodiness worked well with the Young Money rapper’s verses on 2011 mash-up album James Drake. Can’t hardly wait.
