Omar Rodriguez-Lopez’s Bosnian Rainbows Announce Debut With Grainy, Cryptic Video

When the Mars Volta officially broke up earlier this year, frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala loaded his departure announcement with a swipe at Bosnian Rainbows, the new band from Omar Rodríguez-López, his former Volta and At the Drive-In companion.

“Thank u 2 all VOLTA fans u deserved more especially after the way u rooted for us on [2012’s Noctouriniquet]. I tried my hardest to keep it going,” Bixler-Zavala tweeted. “But Bosnian Rainbows was what we all got instead. I can’t sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta.”

Well, Mars Volta fans will be able to judge if Bosnian Rainbows was worth it come June 25, when the Rodríguez-López’ newest outfit — rounded out by singer Teri Gender-Bender, drummer Deantoni Parks, and keyboardist Nicci Kasper — unleash their self-titled debut album via Sargent House Records. The nascent four-piece announced the LP on their Tumblr and offered the above minute-long clip, which is mostly made up of grainy black-and-white footage and stray musical notes. (An inscrutable note from these guys? Shocking!) No track listing or song previews yet, but SPIN’s Marc Hogan did describe recent share “Torn Maps” as “a snapping, new-wavey alt-pop song with, true to Gender-Bender’s name, androgynously piercing vocals,” so that’s something to go off.
