Pioneering dubstep DJ Benga may have originally thought Kraftwerk was related to the cheese, but his latest single, “Future Funk,” moves with a bumptious stiffness that would make the German icons proud. Coming off of the 29-year-old Londoner’s forthcoming EP of the same title — his slamming comeback after retreating from the public last year due to mental health issues — the track also radiates Prince vibes in the bass line somewhere between a crunch and a squelch, infusing the flatly intoned, robotic vocals with a little heat and humor.
Of the EP, Benga wrote on his SoundCloud: “It’s been two years and I have grown a lot, and I now know what’s important: music. I’m back and I think my sound is the most ‘me’ it’s been since [2008’s] Diary of an Afro Warrior and I’m super excited to play it and reconnect with all of the people who have supported me. Let’s have a good year!”
