The 1990s

Who? The Glasgow-based trio — Jackie McKeown (guitar/vocals), Michael McGaughrin (drums/vocals) and Jamie McMorrow (bass) — have just released their debut single, “You Made Me Like It,” and b-side “Arcade Precinct” to online music outlets in the US.

What’s the Deal? “You Made Me Like It,” was produced by Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake. Like their friends Franz Ferdinand, the 1990s’ debut is a call to the dance floor. Cheeky shout-outs to Ladytron and Lady Di are paired with a shimmy-worthy groove that’s akin to a Scottish version of the Cars.

Fun Facts: Singer Jackie McKeown’s former band, the Yummy Fur, featured Franz members Alex Kapranos and Paul Thompson. Now anointed as F.O.F. (Friends of Franz, as they’re called in Scotland), the 1990s got a record deal from notoriously picky UK label Rough Trade just days after being scouted.

Talk: Would the 1990s be getting the same kind of buzz if they weren’t just Friends of Franz? COMMENT
