Windsor for the Derby, ‘How We Lost’ (Secretly Canadian)

If Activision ever issues an indie-rock edition of Guitar Hero, Windsor for the Derby should be the house band. Melodic, melancholy crunch is the veteran Philadelphia-based act’s aesthetic, and their eighth outing is sticky with the influence of Pavement (the bah-dah-bah refrain of “Maladies”), Yo La Tengo (the hushed vocals of “Hold On”), and Sonic Youth (most chord progressions could be Xeroxed from Daydream Nation). Recorded so that the tunes sound as if they’re emanating from recycled answering-machine tape, How We Lost occasionally transcends influence-spotting, rewarding repeat listens with late-night, low-key charm.
