Awake, My Soul OST/Help Me to Sing
Critical Mass
Label: Awake Productions

by Amanda Petrusich

Awake, My Soul is the firstdocumentary film to explore the centuries-old tradition of shape note (or Sacred Harp) singing, a stunning, four-note gospel practice rooted in the American South. The film's original soundtrack features traditional Sacred Harp singing from Georgia and Alabama (it's an outstanding primer for anyone dipping into the genre), and is paired with Help Me to Sing, a collection of tracks inspired by the film and performed by an eclectic roster of indie/folk artists, including Richard Buckner, Danielson, Woven Hand, Elvis Perkins, and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones. Sample Liz Janes' musical-saw-tinged take on "Abbeville 33b" for a particularly haunting cut.
