Theresa Andersson, 'Hummingbird, Go!' (Basin Street)

Swedish transplant delights as a dexterous one-woman band.

Theresa Andersson’s songs are more enjoyable once you learn that she performed them pretty much alone in her New Orleans kitchen, tapping soda bottles, stepping on pedals, playing violin, guitar, drums, and chirping sweetly. Which isn’t to say Hummingbird, Go! needs the backstory: It jumps from cheerful, politically minded pop (“Na Na Na”) to girl-group homage (“Birds Fly Away”) to atmospheric interludes. She even collaborates with legendary New Orleans composer- producer Allen Toussaint. Not all moods suit Andersson -- the sultry, overdramatic “Locusts Are Gossiping” falls flat -- but she builds enough goodwill elsewhere that you’ll want to hear her try everything.

WOW...An album review on SPIN, I had no idea this chick was so big. I herd about her a couple months back on Music For Robots, and then checked out a live show since she was in the Baltimore area and needless to say I got my monies worth. Not only does she have an absolutely gorgeous voice, she loops and layers all of her music live which is pretty awesome. Live from her kitchen here is a great video for an introduction to how TA does things.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMXqn42AykM
