On his ninth album as Six Organs of Admittance, Ben Chasny (also of Comets on Fire) is still channeling obscure acid folkies like Gary Higgins and Sun City Girls — even dedicating one track, “Goddess Atonement,” to the latter. Like his heroes, though, Chasny has far greater range instrumentally than as a singer. And despite Shelter From the Ash‘s transcendent drones and trippy, Eastern-inspired guitar figures — embellished by guests like the Magik Markers’ Elisa Ambrogio and the Fucking Champs mastermind Tim Green (also producer here) — his vocals too often kill the buzz.
