Salvador Santana

'Keyboard City'

Slightly quirkier spin on family fusion biz.

Spin Rating6 of 10

Salvador Santana's solo debut is called Keyboard City, and as the son of Hall of Famer Carlos Santana, he probably figured that was a safer destination than, say, Guitar World. Working with Beastie Boys synthmeister Money Mark, he builds funky, appealingly lightweight electro hip-hop jams around the splurts and squiggles of a huge array of vintage keys; several tracks feature vocals as well, though Santana's low-wattage singing never really dominates like a lead instrument. Taking after his daddy, perhaps, he seems most comfortable stationed behind his weapon of choice.
