Ricardo Villalobos, ‘Fabric 36′ (Fabric)

By: SPIN Staff // January 18, 2008

It takes a certain level of ego to release a mix CD exclusively of one’s own productions, but minimal house/techno producer Ricardo Villalobos is no ordinary DJ mortal. Though he hasn’t set foot on U.S. soil post-9/11, his exhausting, hallucinatory eight-hour live sets are legendary elsewhere. Amoebic, hypnotic, polyrhythmic, Fabric 36 has a bit of everything: fútbol chants, twitchy Prince pop, a sodden chick blathering about the Taliban and marriage over thunderous butoh drumming. It shouldn’t work, but one song’s throwaway line about how “confusion is next to happiness” helps tie it all together.
