Peter Morén, 'The Last Tycoon' (Quarterstick)

You just put your lips together and blow. No? Well, okay.

Without Bjorn and John -- his bandmates in the Swedish indie-pop trio responsible for last year's inescapable "Young Folks" -- Peter Morén sounds like a charter member of producer Jon Brion's brainy L.A. singer/songwriter posse: The Last Tycoon, Morén's low-key solo debut, is long on baritone vocals (à la Michael Penn), folk-rock guitar strums (see Grant Lee Buffalo) and lonely piano plinks (that'd be Fiona Apple). A little whistle would've perked things up, but you can understand if Morén's retired that instrument for now.
