Oh Land, ‘Oh Land’ (Epic)

Offbeat women are now responsible for the best pop that actually sells, so perhaps it was inevitable that someone would come on like Feist and Adele with supermodel cheekbones. This stunning Dane’s synths-plus-strings slant on singer-songwriter lovesickness offers refinement over innovation, yet Nanna Øland Fabricius beguiles with a gently insistent presence. Her “Human” violates just as many grammar rules as the Killers’; but it takes smarts to spin the line “You remind me of the things I hate in me” into an appealing hook. Self-consciousness has its rewards.
