Mister Heavenly, ‘Out of Love’ (Sub Pop)

By: Maura Johnston // August 16, 2011

Made up of Ryan “Honus ?Honus” Kattner (Man Man), Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, the Shins), and Nick Thorburn (the Unicorns, Islands), Mister Heavenly offer loose-limbed rock designed for generation-uniting barroom sing-alongs. “I Am a Hologram” blends the Faces’ swagger and the Elephant 6 collective’s ramshackle ways into something slightly more mannered, while the reverb-heavy “Wise Men” would sound great blasting from a ’61 T-Bird. The whole thing breezes along like an afternoon at a pub where the oldies-laden jukebox takes you from Everly Brothers despair (“Doom Wop”) to island escape (“Reggae Bird”).
