The Mighty Underdogs, ‘Droppin’ Science Fiction’ (Definitive Jux)

By: Mosi Reeves // October 9, 2008

As the stalwart indie MCs now performing under the name Mighty Underdogs, Lateef (from Latyrx and Maroons) and Gift of Gab (from Blackalicious) sling rhymes with effortless wit and style. Produced by third member Headnodic and featuring guest spots by MF Doom, DJ Shadow, and many others, the album moves swiftly from sucka-MC comedy (“Laughing at You”) to comic-strip violence (“Gunfight” and “Ill Vacation”) and true-life confessions (“Escape” and “Folks”). Contrary to its title, Droppin’ Science Fiction eschews cutting- edge futurism for a warm, appealing tone, the result of savvy vets making grown-man hip-hop with casual ease.
