After penning '70s-loving garage scorchers on Love as Laughter's first four albums and then morphing into a poignant slacker songwriter on Laughter's Fifth, Sam Jayne attempts to capture two disparate vibes on Holy: Pixies' loose-limbed chatter and Neil Young's big-sky heartache. Indistinct lyrics and plodding dynamics confine most of the songs to "just okay" status, but a few arresting tracks seem destined for a yet-to-be-built rock Valhalla: "Cleaning Man" finds real catharsis in the despair of a junkie janitor, while "Konny and Jim" rides a plume of adoration to the stratosphere.
