Louis XIV, 'Slick Dogs and Ponies' (Pineapple/ Atlantic)

Randy rock dudes bang a gong, get it on (and on and on).

Most of the attention these San Diego sleazebags have gotten has been due to their ham-handed obsession with sex, and for good reason: The boys' debut featured a naked lady on its cover, and frontman Jason Hill still can't stop asking if his listeners wouldn't mind taking off their clothes. But Louis XIV are also canny retro-rock vultures whose tunecraft reveals more skill (if not more depth) than they get credit for. Here they effectively marry T. Rex's trash-glam melodicism to a relentless blue-eyed funk beat.
