The King Khan & BBQ Show, 'Invisible Girl' (In the Red)
Trash-rock hullabaloo with a slurp and a burp.

Onstage, King Khan has been known to holster the microphone between his ass cheeks. But even knowing that still doesn't prepare you for the anatomical, scatological, and carnal onslaught of "Tastebuds," the third track off his second album with Mark "BBQ" Sultan. Also shocking: It's blisteringly infectious doo-wop rock, suitable for tapings of Hollywood A Go-Go as hosted by Beavis and Butt-head. Khan's trashy Sam Cooke and Bo Diddley impersonations are uncannier than ever, but it's Invisible Girl's ratio of 1960s tribute to 21st-century blaspheming that makes it his most immediately enjoyable work yet.

This album is amazing. Music that would be perfect for a scene in a Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson, or Michel Gondry flic!! (sorry, I'm a music editor)
The Almighty Defenders was created by accident and as an afterthought. They spent several days on it when the Black Lips dropped in on them as they were making this album. They could do worse and spend only a day on some new project. I guess that is next on the menu.
I am just glad it has some thought put into it.. Almighty Defenders was pretty much a let down. When it was good it was okay and when it sucked it sucked donkey balls. This is a great representation of what these are capable of-- now if they could just wrangle those Black Lips dudes

Just to verify, as far as I can tell, this is their third album together, not second. At least I know I have two others. Not to mention the King Khan & BBQ Show/Black Lips supergroup "The Almighty Defenders".

That 'Sam Cooke' is the voice of Mark Sultan, not King Khan! I LOVE 'Tastebuds'! I downloaded this album (ooops!), but it rules.
Got something to say?
