Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid, ‘NYC’ (Domino)

Downtown ennui is blown to the winds as laptopper Kieran “Four Tet” Hebden joins jazz drummer Steve Reid for their fourth, and furthest-out, collaboration. Harnessing acid-rock bass, analog squiggles, and what sounds like a drum showroom’s worth of percussion, these New York odes jump from On the Corner funk to the cosmic maelstrom of the Boredoms. On “25th Street,” metallic rain drizzles over Afrobeat riffs, while”Arrival” sounds like one of Ricardo Villalobos’ endlessly unspooling techno sequences, bronzed with Radiohead’s grandeur. The duo’s virtuosic picture of the 21st-century city feels so alive it might convince Escape From New York‘s Snake Plissken to return.
