Iggy Pop, 'Préliminaires' (Astralwerks)

Critical Mass
Label:

by Mikael Wood

Is Iggy Pop aware that Leonard Cohen has returned to the stage? On this set of songs inspired by French novelist Michel Houellebecq's The Possibility of an Island, the Stooges frontman channels Cohen's philosophical Sprechstimme over burnished old-man arrangements that swirl Parisian café jazz with acoustic blues and low-key electronics. The results feel tossed-off at times, but Iggy still flashes his charm and humor, as on "King of the Dogs," a randy New Orleans boogie in which he boasts of having a piece of meat in between his teeth.
