I See Hawks in L.A., ‘Hallowed Ground’ (Big Book)

While I See Hawks sound like refugees from the ’60s/’70s L.A. country-rock milieu that spawned Poco and the Flying Burrito Brothers (one of the scene’s founding fathers, Chris Hillman, even played on their previous album), the earnest songwriting duo of frontman Rob Waller and guitarist Paul Lacques enhance the band’s earnestly shopworn sagebrush grooves with a shot of timely anxiety. The weepy “Environmental Children of the Future” evokes images of “hundred-year floods” and other perils, and the stomping “Ever Since the Grid Went Down” spins a hair-raising tale of survivalism.
