Shoegaze is better known for oceanic guitars (see My Bloody Valentine, of course, or Slowdive), but a more electronic variant dates back to at least the early 1990s with Seefeel, and up through the more recent “nü gaze” template of M83, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Ulrich Schnauss, and Fuck Buttons. Despite a name nicked from indie-folk sage Bill (Smog) Callahan, Stockholm’s I Break Horses work within this hypnotic, synth-soaked niche. The female-fronted duo’s nine-song debut shows promise, especially on the swirling title track and the explosively gliding “Wired,” though the record’s closing third drifts into samey sleepiness.
