High Places, ‘High Places’ (Thrill Jockey)

On their debut full-length, the duo of Rob Barber and Mary Pearson handcraft their music out of the tiniest of elements. Slivers of banjo, rattles, kalimba, and what sounds like a coffee percolator swirl across winsome exotica miniatures “The Storm” and “Gold Coin.” Pearson’s watery vocals amid the twinkling steel drums and chimes of “Namer” hint where Mary Lou Lord and the Orb might’ve met, while the calliope vibe of “A Field Guide” conveys the delightful dizziness of a merry-go-round.
