It's customary now for New York freak-folk acts to respond to city life with pastoral daydreaming. But Brooklyn's Hem, an ensemble led by songwriter Dan Messé and singer Sally Ellyson, take that dreaminess to new heights: The homey indie-pop tunes on the band's third studio full-length come encased in gorgeous mini-orchestral arrangements that sound inspired by classic Disney scores, not dusty old Pentangle records. The music is grit-free but laced with melancholy.
