Hank III, 'Damn Right Rebel Proud' (Sidewalk)

Satan-lovin’ hillbilly royalty still waiting to inherit family talent.

Four albums in, Bocephus’ boy continues to pretend that the Williams family tradition can make up for his inability to carry a tune. Damn Right Rebel Proud, typically, raises less convincing hell than plenty of current mainstream Nashville product. Muffled train chugs and minor-key gloom make him tolerable in psychobilly mode, and his class-consciousness means well. But from stiff-assed slam dances to meandering hangover slog to interminable GG Allin homage, Hank III’s shtick is no more captivating than your average nasty drunk’s.

Who hired this guy? It's obvious Chuck's not giving Hank props because of his name.

highwayman

Well Chuck I think that we all can see you ignorance and arrogance in this review. III is not "Bocephus's boy" Jr. had absolutly nothing to do with his life from the get go. III has made everything that he has from scratch the hard way. He didn't ride his daddies coat tails the same way that junior did. III is the only one in his family that is making his grandaddy smile up in heaven. You wanna talk about someone that is sucking up his family name lets talk about Shooter Jennings, 3 albums in and he is doing nothing but becoming more of a punk ass sell-out while III is KEEPING IT REAL for everyone else out here looking for something good in this bullshiat country scene. These people are probably right, spin outta keep you on the britney spears reviews since that is the only type of music that your feeble mind can probably grasp.

"3 shades of black is where we come from. We are a certain breed and we don't like you"

sorry that you don't get it.

DarkKnight666

This album just plain sucks. How many times is III gonna sing the same old worn out song ? I swear we have been listening to Nighttime Ramblin Man over and over again for five years now. There is only so much that can be said for getting f*cked up and satan. Who cares? It's boring subject matter at this point. The production of the album is great, the musicians are great, but III's vocals are shot. He sounds nothing like his legendary grandfather and his song writing is very ish. If you need a fix of some authentic country music and not this sh*t check out some of the guys III used to run with like Wayne 'The Train' Han.

bubbys name

I'm not sure you were listening to the right cd. Because the version of Damn Right, Rebel Proud that I heard deserves 5 stars. That boy can sing just like his granddaddy, so are you saying you don't think Hank Sr could carry a tune? I'm guessing you are a fan of Rascal Flatts or some other douche bag band like that. 3 has worked his ass off, and he deserves much respect!

Who is the douche bag who wrote this review? Bet you listen to the White Stripes or Yellow Card on your IPOD. You surely don't get Hank III or Outlaw Country music in general. I love this CD, I give it 5 STARS! I have seen Hank III live 7 times (and counting), and either you get it or you don't. His music and lyrics speak to me directly. Bottom line, if you liked "Risin Outlaw", "Lovesick Broke and Driftin", or "Straight to Hell", then go get this cd NOW, you wont regret it.! The stand out track is "3 Shades of Black", followed a close second by "P.F.F."! REINSTATE HANK WILLIAMS, the Opry has SINNED!

Chucky boy its clear to me you r just too young, sheltered, elitist, or anxious (to conform w/ your frat buddies?) to understand the complexities of a man who has gone out in the world and really lived. You could spend the rest a yer life a up there on yer cushy pedestal OR you could come down here, do some hard work with yer hands, face down yer demons, meet folks from all walks a life, and bust outta that safe blanket yer mama wrapped you sa darn tight in. Maybe then you could make a kickass album a yer own! Hank III earned the deep timbre o his raspy vocals like a man earns a badge or a metal, by fighting hard for what he believes in. I for one feel honored to listen to the dark stories about real life that his voice, his authentic hellbilly sound and his ingenious lyrics have ta tell.

restless in amsterdam but reinstate hank worldwide

First of all, you forgot to add 3 more stars at the ''rate this album'' section.
Because this is an album to my heart and I listened to all the songs yesterday on Amazone.
Hank III is the most talented artist we got left, stood on one stage with Willie Nelson and Keith Richards (you can find that on YOU TUBE and the song is called Death Flowers) in case you did not know that, did you think they would let someone on their stage with them who can not carry a tune (???!!!), it seems something must be wrong with your player or head phones...
I would recommend this album to anyone and listen for yourself.
This Hank III got me to the USA for the first time of my life and I have seen him 4 times and met him 3 times and I enjoyed every moment of it.
And believe me, Hank III can carry any tune from hillbilly to hellbilly and from hellbilly to metal!!!

Pheil

Wow I would like to jump on the band wagon here, what the hell was this guy listening to, Hank III is exactly what he says he is and I have to agree with deathinjim, this guy clearly does not understand the genre. Typical, sorry this wasn't main stream enough for ya, but to use Hank III's words... Pop country music really sucks. (Have a little fun with this CD and don't go lookin' for Tim McGraw, He Ain't here)

WestEndZombie

This review from the same guy that gave Lil Mama four stars. "Music critic genius" I say. How can he not be?
