REVIEWSGym Class Heroes, ‘As Cruel as School Children’

7
As Cruel as School Children
Critical Mass
Label: Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen

by Jon Caramanica

More Atmosphere than Atmosphere themselves, upstate New York's Gym Class Heroes have finally untangled the emo-rap paradigm, understanding that it's the target demographic first, then the method, not vice versa. Travis McCoy is an intuitive, if not inventive, MC, and the band knows all the nuances of post-frat rock. Their second album sounds alarmingly natural, cornering an oddly under-supplied market. Because what teen party is complete without raps about high school gossip ("Scandalous Scholastics") and, of course, MySpace ("New Friend Request")?
