REVIEWSGuilty Simpson, ‘Ode to the Ghetto’

6
Ode to the Ghetto
Critical Mass
Label: Stones Throw

by Mosi Reeves

Guilty Simpson is the most recent Detroit bully blessed by the late J Dilla. The producer contributed a few tracks to Ode to the Ghetto, Guilty's coming out party, along with Madlib, D12's Denaun Porter, Black Milk, and other backpack thugs. The overall sound is impressively bleak, typified by hard, stomping bass drums. And Guilty's in fine form, weaving a strong concept like "Robbery," and tossing out random blasts on the title track: "I'm from the land where they hustlin' hand-to-hand / 25 pigs rush in and jam your plans."
