Grace Jones, ‘Hurricane’ (PIAS America)

Radical and chic in equal extremes, this 63-year-old model/singer/actor epitomized disco, new wave, and black boho culture in the late ’70sand early ’80s, ?before vanishing like a dusky Marlene Dietrich. Finally released in the U.S. with an equally sensuous dub disc, her austere and deluxe ’08 comeback album feels like a transmission from a distant galaxy, where even cult legends still have Beyoncé’s recording budget. Indomitable reggae rhythm section Sly & Robbie slink along like lava on titanium; assorted instrumental freaks mix rock, gospel, and trip-hop, while Jones purrs and growls like the quintessential cougar she remains.
