REVIEWSDungen, ‘Skit I Allt’

8
Skit I Allt
Critical Mass
Label: Mexican Summer

by Spencer Kornhaber

These adventuresome Swedes, led by instrumental virtuoso Gustav Ejstes, might be inspired by psychedelics, but they never leave anything to chemical-enhanced chance on their moody, lovely fourth album. Each track is a work of varied, purpose-driven detail: Pastoral woodwinds give the wordless amble of opener "Vara Snabb" an air of thoughtful hope, while "Blandband" shimmies and skitters, but remains centered by its Peanuts-theme piano. Extended guitar jam "Hogdalstoppen" sounds less like prog-rock wank than a soulful perfectionist's prescheduled reverie.
