Deerhoof, 'Offend Maggie' (Kill Rock Stars)
The world's most lovably baffling art rockers--still lovable, baffling.

The fact that Satomi Matsuzaki sings in her native Japanese for much of Offend Maggie indicates how, after nine albums of chipper noise rock, this Bay Area quartet operates: They're just doing what comes naturally (no matter how unnatural it may sound to the average indie rocker). Greg Saunier shatters his itty-bitty drum kit as if doing his daily reps; Matsuzaki chirps about the imagined inner monologues of fauns and basketballs; and the two guitarists lay down leaden boogie riffs against playful vocal-mimicking lines. The inspired moments of sunny pop and weirdo noise seem effortless, but so does all the aimless jamming.
