The Dead C, 'Secret Earth' (Ba Da Bing!)

Groundbreaking noise trio still stuck in antifidelity rut.

This New Zealand trio deconstructed both their native island's lo-fi pop and the notion of a classic-rock power trio more than 20 years ago, influencing both Sonic Youth and Wolf Eyes along the way. But while they were one of the first bands to deploy a laptop for noisemaking, they've yet to use such technology to make a more appealing recording. Secret Earth is a lumbering, fussbudget din of detuned guitars, next-practice-space-over drums, and monotonic vocals; any of these four long tracks could be scraps from the band's classic Harsh 70s Reality, from 1992, so little have they evolved.
