Dälek, 'Gutter Tactics' (Ipecac)

6
Gutter Tactics
Critical Mass
Label: Ipecac

by Mosi Reeves

Grindcore guitar, industrial clamor, stentorian rhymes? Yep, it's another Dälek album. But what this Newark, New Jersey duo lack in spontaneity and humor on their fourth full-length, they make up in intelligent intensity -- the po-faced political essay "Spear of a Nation" pays homage to apartheid fighters in South Africa, and the proletarian anthem "Armed With Krylon" chronicles hip-hop's unglamorous history. Refining Gutter Tactics' murky metal rap with subwoofer bass frequencies and fierce drum programming, MC Dälek and producer the Oktopus still find inspiration amid the noise.
