It takes a weird ingenuity to create something coherent out of hippie vocal arrangements, sprawling six-string heroism, and understated Brian Enoambience. Alternating Laurel Canyon lady lushness with dueling macho guitars, this San Francisco octet transcend rote nostalgia through extreme sincerity. The jams always pull back at just the right moment, and the songs equal their folksy models. There's so much heart here that even the most exacting re-creations of bygone FM wank seem spontaneous.
