Califone, 'Roots & Crowns' (Thrill Jockey)
Drowsy rambles from one dusty corner to another.

Califone's music is like a half-remembered dream or a mysterious, plotless film, veering from pleasantly womb-like to inexplicably creepy. Here, the Chicago band take a straighter path on their seventh album (adventurous Wilco fans could find a hook or two) but with the same basic ingredients: sleepy folk/blues guitar, ramshackle percussion, quirky noises, quirky noises, and hazy-snap-shot lyrics. Singer/guitarist Tim Rutili delivers his lines like a detached soul in search of clarity.
