The Brian Jonestown Massacre, 'My Bloody Underground' (A)

Batty Bay Area bad boy still keeping on his mean side.

Wondering if the 2004 documentary Dig!'s harsh depiction of Brian Jonestown mastermind Anton Newcombe might've caused Newcombe to reevaluate his loose-cannon shtick? Well, the answer comes right at the top of his long-running psych-rock group's latest, which opens with a lovely little ditty titled "Bring Me the Head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mills' Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs on the White House)." Caked with free-form guitar noise (and nearly 80 minutes long), My Bloody Underground emphasizes the band's trippy side, often at the expense of Newcombe's undervalued tunecraft. But mellow it ain't.
