Brand New, 'Daisy' (Procrastinate Music Traitors/DGC/Interscope)

Fuzzy guitars? Check. Pork and beans? Nope.

The hardy Long Island lugs in Brand New might be the only guys in emo who still care more about Rites of Spring than they do about Weezer. On the follow-up to 2006’s instructively titled The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, frontman Jesse Lacey howls about burning in bed and turning to dirt while his bandmates churn out noisy, jagged art-punk riffs that routinely explode without warning. (You would think the trick would stop surprising you halfway through Daisy, but it doesn’t.) The sound is old-fashioned, but the fury is fresh.

Calgary Brand New

First time I heard this album, I thought this is brand new?? But after listening to it several times, this album is actually extremely good, a bit more grungie than punk but amazing never the less. It amazing to see how far this band came from Your Favorite Weapon and how each album offers something original and fresh, maybe thats why they are called Brand New. By far best song on Daisy is Noro, crazy melody, vinny is amazing.

MannyFrizzle23

That's exactly what I thought.

Ryan Birkhead

I absolutely love Brand New and have been following them for probably 6 years. I've pre-ordered the album and I can hardly wait to hear what's in store. Plus, I'm seeing them in November when they come to Atlanta :)

mehh think the review could've had more to it but i guess keeping it short and sweet is good too. doesn't really tell exactly how amazing Daisy really is though. its loud, obnoxious, and full of distortion. its Brand New being exactly who they want to be and its great. fuq da people who cry about how "bad" it is and want another Deja. this is better than Deja and I hope BN keeps growing like this.

This is a review? Haha okayyy..

chris is so crispy

If anyone wants to preview the entire album, you can go to brand new's myspace website.

What? Since when is Brand New comparable to Weezer in any way? And how are they emo? "Daisy" has more metal influence than anything else, I'd say. Also, SPIN really needs to stop with these one paragraph reviews.

JessieBrandNew

Nirvana and Modest Mouse rip off. Review and record are laughable. The biggest disappointment of the year to me.

Utter tosh. Utter utter tosh.

Josh in NY/NJ

Everything is a ripoff of something. Unless it's Opeth or Dredg. The review is weak, as is your commentary, which is also a ripoff of some 45-year-old fatty living in his parents' basement when describing the latest REO Speedwagon release in 1987.

rip off? this cd is AMAZING. i dont really see how it is comparitive at all to mm or nirvana. the review blows...but the only problem i find with daisy is that it's too short for how long they've left us waiting.

Anonymous

I don't think Brand New cares if they're "rip offs." I read somewhere once "Deja Entendu" means "already heard." And if you're gonna steal, Isaac Brock is a good man to do it from (he steals from himself all the time anyway). I heard echos of it in "The Devil and God..." too. It took me a couple listens to really get into this album, and I still skip over track 2, but the past couple days I can't get away from it (the album, not track 2). I think I played "sink" seven times on the way to work (it's a long commute). And I agree, it's too breif. I got to the end and thought, "wait, what? that's all? nofair."

You obviously have a tiny wiener.

I enjoy these short reviews, rather spending the time to read a long one just realize it is simply the author's opinion and nothing more.

I agree with the last line. "The sound is old-fashioned, but the fury is fresh."

Justin Maller

An amazing album that transmits intensity and angst like nothing I've heard in a long time. Whilst the band certainly has aesthetic touchstones, I feel the sound is their own. It sounds like they are starting to master the art of contrast and blend it with a towering fury. The results are stunning.

A more in depth review would be appreciated.

actually, i'm pretty sure jesse "cares" about weezer. he covered them at an acoustic.

What cha got there SPIN? 3 sentences? Oh nice.

SHAR

Because the boys in Brand New do not spend a lot of time writing the music together; you can almost feel every member in the band lashing out in their own artsy-angst way. Ultimately coming together in this very raw unity. It has defined the word "Chaos" all over again for me.

Mattindy

possible AOTY. soooo good.

idlehands237

Like the last album..better album cover than album. I had the misfortune of having to sit through these guys live in concert...It was like an eternity..

only heard the album once. i used to be dissapointed with their new albums because i wanted more of the old sound, but after listening for awhile, i liked their newer albums the most. I've learned that i can never expect where this band is going to take the sound. this album isn't as solid as devil and god, it's alot more experimental and chaotic, but it does some things i've never heard before which is great. also has anyone else notice the references to the civil war. "theres no revolution" "I want to know why theres this great divide". big difference from the last one which had a very subtle science theme, hiding behind the more obvious death and whats after theme.

This album is amazing. BN is a band that doesn't give a shit about what's popular or mainstream. They make music that is powerful with emotion and true to themselves. They're constant evolving: never the same, but also not trying to be something they are not. True artists. This review sucks though.

JDHemmerich

Im actually impressed with this album. I wasn't expecting the real sort of, "Grunge" sound.

Anonymous

wow, where is the real review?

Anonymous

Was this reviewer listening to the same album as me? “Old-fashioned”? Heavily influenced maybe, but presented in a superbly original structure. Then there is the “emo” comment. “Emo” is not a term looked kindly upon by many, I believe because it has come to be synonymous with “whiney”, although that was not its’ original definition. And “whiney” should not be confused with “meditative” which the album definitely is. So let’s try to save the word “emo” for boy bands who act like fitful elementary children.

Samson

Screw you Spin Magazine. Every album deserves a contemplative review.

Anonymouse

Every album they take another step away from the mainstream and still sound great.
Emo? Can we please let that word die already?

someone else

I pre-ordered the album just about 5 days ago before realizing that my timing, coupled with my headstrong (almost absolute; I broke and listened to the title track this afternoon) refusal to listen until I receive it physically, would most likely leave me a late bird. I doubt, however, that I'll be missing out on any worms.
