Brand New, 'Daisy' (Procrastinate Music Traitors/DGC/Interscope)
Fuzzy guitars? Check. Pork and beans? Nope.

The hardy Long Island lugs in Brand New might be the only guys in emo who still care more about Rites of Spring than they do about Weezer. On the follow-up to 2006’s instructively titled The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, frontman Jesse Lacey howls about burning in bed and turning to dirt while his bandmates churn out noisy, jagged art-punk riffs that routinely explode without warning. (You would think the trick would stop surprising you halfway through Daisy, but it doesn’t.) The sound is old-fashioned, but the fury is fresh.

I absolutely hated this album when I first heard it. But it's almost as if Brand New knows more about what i will (eventually) like than I do. Just like Deja Entendu, I ended up liking this album a lot more after several listens. Although, I do have to FF through the first minute and a half of the first track.
at first i agreed with the couple people that said that this was a terrible album butt after listening to it a few times its relli actualli amazing just blast it on headfones at like 3 in the morning yull be a changed men this is probably there best album closly fllowed by deja entendu
good to see vinnie getting some props for everything hes done on this album. saw them live and backup guitarist derrick sherman can shred too.
Intense album.
I believe what the author of the review means by the emo comment was that Brand New draws more upon the origins of the "emo" scene than its present interpretation. The author uses the bands, Rites of Spring and Weezer, to demonstrate the benchmarks in the evolution of the genre. By no means is making a comparison, only a reference. The early "emo" sound was more akin to hardcore or hardcore-ish punk sound of the east coast anyway, as this album also demonstrates. Therefore an appropriate reference. But I also don't want to assume what the author was intending, so take it as my opinion.
As for the album, the music is as strong as anything they've done. I love the intensity. But lyrically, this is a far cry from even their first efforts. This is like bad high school poetry.
But I could listen to "sink" all day long...if the lyrics didn't bug me so bad.
I believe this is the most creative and most thought inspiring brand new cd yet, while still scratching our hard rock itches with tracks like "sink." I believe that brand new broadens their musical spectrum with every new track. Seriously best cd of 2009!

I don't think Brand New cares if they're "rip offs." I read somewhere once "Deja Entendu" means "already heard." And if you're gonna steal, Isaac Brock is a good man to do it from (he steals from himself all the time anyway). I heard echos of it in "The Devil and God..." too. It took me a couple listens to really get into this album, and I still skip over track 2, but the past couple days I can't get away from it (the album, not track 2). I think I played "sink" seven times on the way to work (it's a long commute). And I agree, it's too breif. I got to the end and thought, "wait, what? that's all? nofair."
Emo...since when? There is a nirvna influence, if you dont hear it in bought a bride you're not listening. BN didnt happen to make as solid an album as devil and god, but everyone has their masterpiece, and that was it, as for now. The style suffers a bit from vins added input, how they didnt hide pen and paper from him after handcuffs is a mystery to me. It takes time to resonate like D&G did, but ive listened it over and over and it has, showcasing moments that are the best in the bands career. as for the review, please understand that paramore is totally, like, way more important. obviously.
I hate when people bitch about deja being the best.
This album and The Devil and God are way better.
They're more interesting, have better lyrics, better instrumentals and is overall a better piece of art. Don't get me wrong i love deja, and your favorite weapon and the devil and god is still may favorite, but i really like the direction the band is going with their music. They've matured in style and quality....and it pwns
this album is the best of the best.
first time i listened through the album i thought "this is ****". but its not. its just so different. but after i listened to it a couple of times, i really have to say its so great. album of the year!
The 1st time through the album (and more specifically the 1st minute into "Vices") I thought to myself, "what the hell, this kinda sucks and doesnt sound anything like "Brand New". But the more I listened to it, the more I realized that what makes Brand New amazing, and why they are my favorite band and have been ever since "Favorite Weapon", is that nothing ever sounds like their previous album. From Favorite Weapon to "Deja Entendu" to "The Devil and God" to "Daisy", each one is complete different and original than the last. Daisy is AMAZING if you give it chance, best CD of the year in my mind!
Album of the year - full on, innovative and when they play this new stuff live they will be mind-blowing; trust me I saw them in Manchester.
i thought it was a horrible album. many repeated chorus's lines (i layed her in the bed, i laid her in the bed.... and so on and so on), no vocal melody, half-assed guitar licks. i think this album was a huge step backwards.
A true work of art Brand New has done what they do best, Bring something "brand new" and heavy/soft at the same time,A record that gives you chills And never lets up, A full circle of an album..
I pre-ordered the album just about 5 days ago before realizing that my timing, coupled with my headstrong (almost absolute; I broke and listened to the title track this afternoon) refusal to listen until I receive it physically, would most likely leave me a late bird. I doubt, however, that I'll be missing out on any worms.
Every album they take another step away from the mainstream and still sound great.
Emo? Can we please let that word die already?
Screw you Spin Magazine. Every album deserves a contemplative review.
That's exactly what I thought.
Was this reviewer listening to the same album as me? “Old-fashioned”? Heavily influenced maybe, but presented in a superbly original structure. Then there is the “emo” comment. “Emo” is not a term looked kindly upon by many, I believe because it has come to be synonymous with “whiney”, although that was not its’ original definition. And “whiney” should not be confused with “meditative” which the album definitely is. So let’s try to save the word “emo” for boy bands who act like fitful elementary children.
wow, where is the real review?
Im actually impressed with this album. I wasn't expecting the real sort of, "Grunge" sound.
This album is amazing. BN is a band that doesn't give a **** about what's popular or mainstream. They make music that is powerful with emotion and true to themselves. They're constant evolving: never the same, but also not trying to be something they are not. True artists. This review sucks though.
You obviously have a tiny wiener.
only heard the album once. i used to be dissapointed with their new albums because i wanted more of the old sound, but after listening for awhile, i liked their newer albums the most. I've learned that i can never expect where this band is going to take the sound. this album isn't as solid as devil and god, it's alot more experimental and chaotic, but it does some things i've never heard before which is great. also has anyone else notice the references to the civil war. "theres no revolution" "I want to know why theres this great divide". big difference from the last one which had a very subtle science theme, hiding behind the more obvious death and whats after theme.
rip off? this cd is AMAZING. i dont really see how it is comparitive at all to mm or nirvana. the review blows...but the only problem i find with daisy is that it's too short for how long they've left us waiting.
Like the last album..better album cover than album. I had the misfortune of having to sit through these guys live in concert...It was like an eternity..
Everything is a ripoff of something. Unless it's Opeth or Dredg. The review is weak, as is your commentary, which is also a ripoff of some 45-year-old fatty living in his parents' basement when describing the latest REO Speedwagon release in 1987.
possible AOTY. soooo good.
First time I heard this album, I thought this is brand new?? But after listening to it several times, this album is actually extremely good, a bit more grungie than punk but amazing never the less. It amazing to see how far this band came from Your Favorite Weapon and how each album offers something original and fresh, maybe thats why they are called Brand New. By far best song on Daisy is Noro, crazy melody, vinny is amazing.
Utter tosh. Utter utter tosh.
Got something to say?
