Birdmonster, 'From the Mountain to the Sea' (Fader)

Thoughtful Bay Area gents confuse blandness for subtlety.

The best moments are buried in the details on the second album from this roots-inclined San Francisco band. Alternating folky pop and Springsteen-lite eruptions, Peter Arcuni describes familiar romantic scenarios in a vanilla voice, drawing images from the natural world to add dashes of color to "Greenland Sound" and "Lost at Sea." Occasionally, an unsettling tension creeps into Arcuni's accounts, upping the ante: "New Country" embeds toxic resentment in its catchy chorus, while "Born to Be Your Man" suggests a stalkerlike determination. Just as frequently, though, he's easy to ignore.
